It acts as a competitive antagonist of thiamine in the thiamine transport mechanisms of Eimeria spp., disrupting carbohydrate metabolism, which is essential for the growth and survival of coccidia. Coccidia that take amprolium starve and suffer from malnutrition due to thiamine deficiency.
